Heading South

....I'm leaving on a jet plane... don't know when I'll be back again...

This classic Peter, Paul, and Mary song kept strumming through my mind as I stood in the airport ready to board my flight on Dec 26th.  It was hard saying goodbye to my family over the holidays, but their unwavering support gave me much comfort.  I safely met up with the rest of the research team, including Dr. Lee, in Miami, FL later that day.  We then had a 9 hour flight across the Atlantic to Santiago, Chile.  From there, we landed in Punta Arenas on December 27th, which is the southernmost tip of Chile.  It's summertime here in the southern hemisphere, but a chilly and windy one!  I can't wait to give you more details about my trip so far,  but it will need to wait till I have a better internet connection.

I am sitting here now on the Lawrence M. Gould icebreaker ship, waiting to depart on the final four days of the voyage to Palmer Station, Antarctica.  I won't have an internet connection till I arrive and get settled.   It won't be the smoothest boat ride, but I look forward to this next part of my adventure!    Bon voyage and I wish you a Happy New Year!!!!

Hi Natalie,
Wishing you a exciting adventure to the continent of Antarctica. I used to send geobears around the world with parents, grandparents and friends and they would get passed on to other travelers. We had a teddy bear make it to Antarctica. I hope you have a great journey and meet up with your little friends..... the wingless flies.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! ;o) Natalie and Rick. Your adventures are just beginning and we're all thinking about you. This is what you worked so hard for so ENJOY the experience to the max! I hope you celebrated your entry into 2012 in fine frashion. It will be a memorable one and the beginning of a January of a lifetime. I hope that the Drake crossing was kind to you and that you could explore the ship. The inflatable spot lit Scooby Doo in my front yard is wildly dancing in the wind as a cold front passes through southwestern Ohio. Wishing you the best of weather and a wealth of great photographic subjects. As in Wyoming, make sure that you get in the photos. There's a whole school system of children waiting to see you and cheer you on. The best to you, Ranger Ed and Cole.

I and everyone at the Fred Astaire Dance Studio are so impressed with all your accomplisments in education. Wow, and now an Antarctica expedition studying a fly that can survive being frozen. This can surely help in future medical advancements. Good Luck. I look forward to hearing about your adventure.

I see what looks like lakes. Are these freshwater? Can you drink from them?

Hello Mr. Iacano,

Thanks for following along on the blog. Yes, you are seeing a temporary freshwater pond in the image. With all the penguin rookeries nearby, I wouldn't recommend drinking it since their guano is often in the runoff.

Hi Miss Harr! I hope you are warm and cozy! Are you having fun with the penguins? I will see you on the computer tomorrow! It will be fun. What color is your coat? Is it black or green? I hope you are having a fun time. Does the bug have wings? Are the penguins loud? What penguin is your favorite? I like the chinstrapped penguin. The baby penguins are my favorite. They are so cute.
